How Do Metal Detector Arches Work?

Walk-through arches operate using electromagnetic fields:

    Transmitter coils inside the arch generate a uniform magnetic field.

    Metal objects disturb this field as a person walks through.

    Receiver coils detect these disturbances.

    Signal processing software analyses the disruption and determines the size, shape, and location of the metal.

    Visual and audio alerts are triggered, guiding security staff to perform a secondary check if needed.

Multi-Zone Detection

Modern metal detector arches, such as 6-zone, 18-zone, or 33-zone models, divide the person’s body into vertical detection areas. This means the system can not only detect the presence of metal but also pinpoint its location (for example, left shoe, right pocket, or upper torso). This makes inspections faster and more accurate because staff can focus on the specific area flagged by the arch.

  • Each vertical section of the arch is divided into narrow bands, from the feet (zone 1) up to the head (zone 33).
  • The arch also divides left, centre, and right zones, providing three-dimensional pinpointing.

  • If a metallic object is detected in zone 3, right side, staff know immediately to check the person’s lower left leg.
